Portable Karaoke Machine Buying Guide

With so many choices, buying a portable karaoke machine can be fun. With a little research prior to setting off to purchase your machine, you will find that you know enough to buy that absolutely correct one to fit your needs. Prior to shopping for your new karaoke machine, consider these factors:

1. Features

Features and Flexibility work hand in hand with any Karaoke unit. Some of these features you will need and other you will not. Features to look for include an adjustable gain for microphone inputs and onboard effects, such as reverb. Reverb is a feature that adds a touch of echo to the sound, which can make singers sound much better.

The type of microphone input should also be closely examined. Many lower-end machines, especially portable Karaoke machines, tend to make do with 1/4 inch inputs. These can limit your choices of upgraded microphones later.

Better karaoke units offer a different type of input called an XLR input. Due to a better signal path created by these inputs, you get better singing results regardless of the microphone used. If you intend on upgrading the microphones to those similar to what someone in a band uses, then you will definitely want to find a unit with XLR inputs. XLR inputs will be about the size of a dime, with 3 holes for 3 pins. A 1/4 inch input looks like the old-fashioned headphones output.

2. Flexibility

Flexibility is important to consider because it determines how well the machine can adapt to new television technology, different types of music files, and different places. The portable karaoke unit you choose should be able to be hooked up to any type of TV, including today’s modern, digital televisions. With that said, even modern televisions have the ability to play video from the single yellow cord that comes with an RCA input. It is also important that the machine can hookup to multiple televisions at once. Quality portable karaoke machines should have at least two outputs; this enables the singer and the crowd to watch separate screens.

The other element of flexibility is whether the machine will play CD-R's that you have burned karaoke content onto. It is easy to find and buy karaoke music online, but you must consider the added cost of shipping and the time spent waiting for your music to arrive. Some new karaoke machines have USB ports so you don't even have to burn a CD. Just plug the memory device into the karaoke machine and you are ready to go.

3. Price

Finally, you must consider price; in fact, this may be your deciding factor. Even portable karaoke machines vary greatly in price. The features and flexibility dictate how much the machine will cost. To make your choice, consider how much you can spend and what features you want. From there, you will want to find the karaoke machine that best balances those needs.
