Tight And Firm Grips In Golf
There is a difference between a firm grip and a tight grip, we want a tight grip. It is far more common to see someone who has a grip that is too loose than it is to see one that is too tight. Our goal then is to get golfers to tighten their grip.
Don't grip your golf club so tightly that it creates tension in the muscles of your shoulders and upper arms, but maintain a firm grip on the club. You may be wondering how you should keep your wrists. If you keep them too tight, you'll have a stiff swing, and you won't get a proper wrist break.
Never mind about the wrists. The whole tendency in pupils is to take too light a putting grip. The loose grip leads into faultsopening the hands at the top, collapsing the left wrist, over-swinging, and so on. The tight golf club grip, though it may feel awkward for a while, acts as a brace against these various faults and makes the whole swinging action easier to perform correctly.
When we say that there should be a tight grip on the club we mean that every finger that touches the club should be applying pressure. The main fingers that touch the club are the last three on the left hand and the first three of the right hand. If the forefinger of your right hand touches below your right thumb then it should have pressure too.
Be sure that your finger makes contact with your thumb as it reaches around the shaft of the club. If they are not hooked together, the club will very likely shift at the top of your swing from the tip of the fingers into the recessed webbing between your finger and thumb. This would cause a loss of control that, unless corrected, would change the dynamic of your swing.
Now, how do we make the ball stand up? This also isn't a great mystery, but you do have to observe particular points.
In the first place, we should take a position that enables us to swing the club back freely and to bring it down to the ball on an inside-out arc easily. For this the weight should be about equally divided between the feet. The knees must be slightly flexed, better too much than too little. The body should be bent slightly from the waist but the shoulders should be rounded or hunched over.
The head should be down, not to an exaggerated extent, but down rather than up. The right shoulder, of course, will be lower than the left, because the right hand is farther down on the shaft than the left hand.
You now possess the knowledge of how to apply the correct amount of tension to your golf club grip. You also have learned how tight to hold the club and the proper stance. All you need now is practice!
