RTA Cabinets: Are They Right For You?

No, this is not a brand name of kitchen cabinetry. Rather it stands for Ready to Assemble. When you buy cabinets online, they're usually RTA kitchen cabinets. You can save quite a bit of money by using RTA cabinets rather than pre-built kitchen cabinets from a hardware or big box store.

Pre-built cabinets are usually more likely to be damaged in shipping and less well built than the less expensive RTA kitchen cabinets. Many people have a great fear of the complexities of assembling them. This fear is basically totally unjustified.

The ready to assemble cabinets of today come equipped with special hardware that makes them extremely easy to put together. Usually, the only tools you'll need to put your cabinet together are a screwdriver and a drill. This is due to a joining system known as a cam lock. There are two different cam lock systems, plastic cam locks and metal cam locks.

Most RTA kitchen cabinets are built mainly from plywood, with plywood tops, sides, and bottoms. The shelves will be made of either 5/8 inch plywood, or inch plywood. The drawer box of a cabinet is also plywood. Drawer slides are either side mounted or under mounted, though most manufacturers make them side mounted. Soft closing and self closing drawer slides are sometimes available--they're under mounted and tend to be fairly expensive. You might have a choice of hardware, like exposed or European pulls and handles, with some models.

Often when you use big box stores to purchase kitchen cabinets, you will find that they use cardboard or particle board. You usually don't have to worry about this with RTA cabinets, as they're usually made of the aforementioned plywood, which is far more durable than those other materials. Another advantage of RTA cabinet construction is a dovetail construction that's used for the drawers to avoid the need to simply glue drawers together. A clear sealer finishes some high-quality RTA cabinets. Cabinets treated with sealer are simpler to clean.

Try to find out about the assembly instructions you'll receive when your new kitchen cabinets arrive. Some manufacturers of RTA kitchen cabinets will gladly offer you a sample of their instructions. Some manufacturers and sellers even post instructions on their websites. Read the sample instructions and see if they are clear and concise. Some manufacturers also include a toll free number for you to use should you require more instructions or have any questions. This too is a mark of the higher quality online stores of RTA kitchen cabinets.

Don't go for the cheapest seller of RTA cabinets you can find--look into their credentials to make sure you're dealing with a company that's been around for a while. It's much better to deal with a reputable company when buying RTA kitchen cabinets, as this ensures high quality, long lasting, and easy to assemble cabinets that will last you for years.
