A Brief on the Relevance of GHS MSDS
One of the most important actions taken by the United Nations in the recent past, an action that is very relevant to global security and safety in the work environment is the Globally Harmonized System of classification of hazardous chemicals or GHS. Though the concept of labeling of chemicals goes back some 4000 years ago to ancient Egypt when the great Imhotep would record the complete documentation of his prescriptions, modern world has been silent while countries kept making the world an unsafe place to live in.
Till GHS MSDS arrived, there was no rationalization in either classification of chemicals or their labeling.This increasing danger was not caused only because new kinds of explosives were being invented each day such as RDX and PETN or plastic explosives but because of the general reluctance of countries that invented these new explosives to place them into any uniform pattern of classification that would rationalize each hazardous chemical with the effects that it would cause.
Simply put, you would open a box of rockets that would give all the details regarding the number and the net weight as well as the nomenclature of the munition but nowhere would the composition of the rocket, its igniter, warhead or fuse be mentioned. GHS was, therefore, finally introduced and endorsed by the United Nations Economic and Social Council in July 2003. The GHS form of classification was relevant for a whole range of chemicals. With one stroke, it made it compulsory for all nations to adopt a system of labeling that was known as GHS MSDS where MSDS stood for Material Safety Data Sheets.
GHS MSDS seeks to standardize the labeling of all chemicals such that every person who is handling them is aware of the hazards of the chemical and how to deal with an incident involving them. The labeling would indicate the chemicals used in a product and the effects that the product could have, the first aid that was involved and the protective gear that was to be used.
