If you're planning on taking a gap year then the biggest question on your lips is probably, how to fund it. This guide gives you an indication of the average spend on a gap year, and how the majority of graduates go about funding their experience:
Mum and Dad
If mum and dad have agreed to fund your gap year experience then you're incredibly lucky. With the average cost of a gap year amounting to just over £3,000 it's certainly quite a costly experience. If your parents are planning on paying then you'll need to decide how you're going to sort out the funding. Many parents choose to give their children a lump sum before they go on their travels, whilst for others a pre-paid credit card is a sensible option. This card looks like a credit or debit card and can be used in the same way, without the issue of getting of overdrawn. Pre-paid credit cards allow you to load cards by transferring funds online or over the phone. So if you do find yourself stuck in the Kalahari Desert and short of funds, your parents should be able to send you a transfer from home.
Your Work
If you stopped asking your parents for hand-outs the second you left school and started to make your own way in life, then asking them to fund you while you gallivant off across the world may seem like a preposterous idea. Some people work for a year to raise the money to go on a gap year, whilst others just dip into their savings. Of course, even if you don't plan on living in the lap of luxury, costs can quickly mount up. Whilst £3,000 seems like a small amount to raise, it's worth noting that it can take up to six months to raise the cash if you work full-time, once you've covered the basics of tax and rent.
Get a Grant
It's a little known secret, but some companies do provide grants to gap year students. The Peter Kirk European Memorial Fund gives £1,500 annually for up to 12 young adults to travel around Europe. Lion and Rotary Clubs also have funds available for young people travelling overseas on a gap year. Getting involved with your rotary club afterwards is a great way to thank them for their funds, and many students give talks to the members on their experiences afterwards.
Projects That Include Food and Board
If you don't trust yourself to raise the money for food and board, or are convinced that you're going to run out of cash in the departure lounge, then it may be worth investing in a gap year project where food and board are included. Shamwari Game Reserve is an example of such a project, and the reserve's veritable band of conservation volunteers are given accommodation and delicious home-cooked meals every night. Shamwari also has the added bonus of being in the middle of nowhere so you won't get much of an opportunity to splurge your gap year savings.
