Why Workout Straps Are Not the Answer!

I came across workout straps in the late eighty's and began using them to help my grip with the ever-increasing weight I was then lifting. Having been involved in fitness and weightlifting for the last 25 years, I have seen all sorts of weightlifting accessories. I had great success, putting on tons of muscle and lifting the weight the giant fellows were pumping out.

Around the mid ninety's, I hit an expansion plateau and employed a trainer, a certified professional body-builder, to appraise my workouts and help me grow. The 1st proposal I received from him was "get rid of the workout straps". The look on my face pushed further reason from him. His speculation was that if I was lifting an amount of weight that I couldn't grasp without help I was putting my joints and muscles in danger. "Never lift more weight than you can control", I was told time after time again. It seems that the muscles in the forearm grow best when the hand is grasping the weight as hard as it can. He pointed out the reverse curls I was doing for forearms were being rendered ineffective by the employment of workout straps since I wasn't being forced to grip the bar with all my might.

I quit using the workout straps and as if by magic my shoulder and joint pain subsided.  And my forearms got thicker as if on steroids (which they were never). Not only did my forearms grow to Popeye dimensions but my fingers and hands became thicker and stronger. I eventually accomplished the forearms that every Oliveoil admired and just by stopping my use of workout straps.

I once more became happy with my expansion and lack of constant joint agony but was faced with a totally new problem. The calluses were distressing and ugly and gave me something to pick at when I was bored but I actually was concerned not to have them. I attempted weight lifting gloves, and they solved the slippery bar problem but I found them too constrictive, tricky to get on and off and they were constantly soaked with sweat.

Then I discovered Gorilla-Grips. These amazing small leather pads, held in place by elasticized finger loops, covered and protected just the palm of my hand in the area where calluses tended to form. Powerblock Personal Dumbbell Vs. XVest Turbobells - Is One Better?

If you are in the market for a dumbbell set, then you have plenty of options to choose from; there is the Powerblock personal set and there is also the XVest Turbobells.  These two are not the only dumbbell sets out there, but they are two of the most popular models. Most folks have heard of the Powerblock personal set, but they may not have heard of the XVest Turbobells.  The XVest Turbobells are just as functional as the previous personal dumbbells mentioned.

When you look at a Powerblock personal dumbbell there is no mistaking it for any other type of adjustable dumbbell. It has the same compact square design that the brand has become recognizable for. This design gives a more secure feel to the weights, though some people find it awkward the way the hand has to be placed inside four small columns of weight.

Designed to adjust by increments of 2.5 pounds and capable of supporting fifty, the Powerblock personal dumbbell can be adapted to meet the needs of the novice as well as the serious lifter. The nicest thing about this feature is that it really allows the user to target and customize their weight lifting goals since other systems just like the Powerblock only let you adjust the weights in 3 and 5 pound increments.

The locking mechanism to secure the chosen weight plates is a pin style very similar to larger weight machines you may have used at the gym.

The XVest Turbobells have a very different design that is quite unique. Instead of the popular turn dial or a pin style of adjusting the weights, there is a little switch on the weights that you flip based on the amount of weight you would like to work out with.

Something else unique about this dumbbell is its handle, which has two flat sides to prevent the dumbbell from rolling and is covered with rubber to give an excellent grip. There's no doubt of a secure hold when you reach for these dumbbells.

The XVest Turbobells begin at just 5 pounds and go all the way up to 60 pounds. The dumbbells move in increments of 2.5 pounds like the Powerblock dumbbell system does, but there is an additional 10 pounds of weight available on each arm.

Heavy users beware, however, as the XVest Turbobells are less durable and of slightly less quality than the Powerblock set.

Both of these are exceptional quality dumbbells, but the Powerblock may be a bit higher in quality.
